How to calculate Pipeline Coverage Ratio
Pipeline coverage ratio compares open pipeline value to the quota still left to win. It shows whether you have enough opportunities to hit target.
Formula
Pipeline coverage = open pipeline value ÷ (quota − already won)SQL query
This example assumes: deals(id, stage, amount, expected_close), quotas(period_start, quota_amount). It is written in PostgreSQL syntax; date functions differ slightly in MySQL, BigQuery and SQLite, and your column names will differ from these.
WITH q AS (
SELECT SUM(quota_amount) AS quota FROM quotas WHERE period_start = DATE '2026-10-01'
), won AS (
SELECT COALESCE(SUM(amount), 0) AS won FROM deals
WHERE stage = 'won' AND closed_at >= DATE '2026-10-01'
), open_p AS (
SELECT COALESCE(SUM(amount), 0) AS pipe FROM deals
WHERE stage = 'open' AND expected_close BETWEEN DATE '2026-10-01' AND DATE '2026-12-31'
)
SELECT open_p.pipe / NULLIF(q.quota - won.won, 0) AS coverage
FROM q, won, open_p;Common mistakes that make Pipeline Coverage Ratio wrong
- Using the full quota instead of the remaining quota overstates the gap late in the period.
- Including deals with an expected close date outside the period inflates coverage.
- Treating every open deal as equally likely; coverage says nothing about quality unless you compare it with your win rate.
Ask for Pipeline Coverage Ratio in plain English
Instead of writing the query yourself, you can type the question. SchemaChat turns it into SQL against your connected database or uploaded file, runs it, and shows the SQL and the figures it used so you can check the answer before you share it. It does not replace your judgement about the definition: check that the query matches the formula your business uses.
- What is our pipeline coverage for this quarter?
- How much more pipeline do we need to cover the remaining quota?
