SchemaChat vs Power BI

Power BI is one of the most widely used BI tools and a sensible default if your company already runs on Microsoft 365 and Fabric. Copilot adds natural-language help inside it. SchemaChat takes a different route: connect a database read-only, ask in plain English, and see the SQL and a receipt for every answer, without buying capacity or building a data model first. This page explains where each fits. Microsoft's requirements below were checked on 30 October 2026 on Microsoft Learn.

What it isAn AI analyst: ask a question or set a goal; it runs read-only queries, builds dashboards and sends alerts.A full BI suite — semantic models, reports and dashboards — with Copilot for chat, summaries and report creation.
Getting started with AI helpConnect read-only and ask. It reads your schema; governed metrics are optional.Copilot needs a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium capacity (P1 or higher); a Pro or Premium Per User license alone is not enough, trial capacities are not supported, and an admin setting must be on. Microsoft also advises preparing the semantic model for AI before use.
Where answers come fromEvery answer that runs a query shows its SQL and a “How this was computed” receipt; if the data can't answer, it says so.When a question relates to the semantic model, Copilot uses it; otherwise Microsoft says it answers from the language model's general knowledge. Why teams pick SchemaChat

  • You want to ask questions of your own database now, without buying capacity or building a semantic model first.
  • You want every number to come with its SQL so a colleague can check it.
  • Your team is small and has no one who builds and maintains Power BI models.
  • Your data lives in Postgres, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake or Sheets rather than in Microsoft services.

When Power BI is the better fit

  • Your organisation is standardised on Microsoft 365 and Fabric, and people already build in Power BI.
  • You need enterprise controls and compliance (SSO, certifications) today.
  • You need governed semantic models, pixel-perfect reports, or report subscriptions at scale.

We'd rather you pick the right tool than the loudest pitch.

SchemaChat vs Power BI — FAQ

Does SchemaChat replace Power BI?
Not for most Power BI users. They do different jobs: Power BI is a full reporting suite; SchemaChat answers questions and investigates goals on your database. Some teams use both — SchemaChat to explore, Power BI for the standard reports.
What does Power BI Copilot require?
As of 30 October 2026, Microsoft Learn lists a paid Fabric capacity (F2 or higher) or Power BI Premium (P1 or higher), an enabled admin setting and a supported region; Pro or Premium Per User alone is not sufficient, and trial capacities are not supported. Always check the current Microsoft page.
Can SchemaChat read my Power BI datasets?
No. SchemaChat connects to databases, Google Sheets and files directly, not to Power BI semantic models.
Which is cheaper?
It depends on your seats and whether you already pay for capacity. Compare Microsoft's published prices with SchemaChat's pricing page for your team size.
