How to calculate Win Rate

Win rate is the share of closed deals that were won. It shows how well your team converts opportunities that reached a decision.

Formula

Win rate = deals won ÷ (deals won + deals lost) × 100

SQL query

This example assumes: deals(id, stage, amount, closed_at) where stage is 'won', 'lost' or 'open'. It is written in PostgreSQL syntax; date functions differ slightly in MySQL, BigQuery and SQLite, and your column names will differ from these.

SELECT DATE_TRUNC('month', closed_at) AS month,
       COUNT(*) FILTER (WHERE stage = 'won') * 100.0
         / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0) AS win_rate_pct
FROM deals
WHERE stage IN ('won', 'lost')
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1;

Common mistakes that make Win Rate wrong

  • Putting open deals in the denominator makes the rate look low and move with pipeline size.
  • Grouping by created date instead of closed date mixes cohorts: a deal created in March and won in June belongs to June's decision.
  • Counting deals that were disqualified before any real sales effort as losses.

Ask for Win Rate in plain English

Instead of writing the query yourself, you can type the question. SchemaChat turns it into SQL against your connected database or uploaded file, runs it, and shows the SQL and the figures it used so you can check the answer before you share it. It does not replace your judgement about the definition: check that the query matches the formula your business uses.
