What is Business Intelligence?

Business intelligence is the practice of collecting, organising and analysing business data so that people can make better decisions.

Business Intelligence explained

BI covers the whole path from raw data to a decision: gathering data from source systems, modelling it, calculating measures such as revenue and churn, and presenting the results in reports and dashboards.

Traditional BI relied on analysts to build reports on request. Newer approaches let people ask questions directly, in plain English, and get an answer with the underlying query visible.

Example

A weekly sales report that shows revenue, pipeline and win rate by region, and lets managers click into any region, is a BI deliverable.
