How to calculate Churned MRR

Churned MRR is the monthly recurring revenue lost in a period because customers cancelled.

Formula

Churned MRR = sum of the MRR of subscriptions cancelled during the period

SQL query

This example assumes: subscriptions(id, customer_id bigint, mrr numeric, started_at timestamptz, canceled_at timestamptz). It is written in PostgreSQL syntax; date functions differ slightly in MySQL, BigQuery and SQLite, and your column names will differ from these.

SELECT DATE_TRUNC('month', canceled_at)::date AS month,
       COUNT(*) AS cancelled_subscriptions,
       SUM(mrr) AS churned_mrr
FROM subscriptions
WHERE canceled_at IS NOT NULL
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1;

Common mistakes that make Churned MRR wrong

  • Use the MRR the subscription had when it was cancelled, not its original price.
  • Customers who cancel and resubscribe within the same month should be netted out.
  • Downgrades are contraction, not churn; keep them in a separate metric.

Ask for Churned MRR in plain English

Instead of writing the query yourself, you can type the question. SchemaChat turns it into SQL against your connected database or uploaded file, runs it, and shows the SQL and the figures it used so you can check the answer before you share it. It does not replace your judgement about the definition: check that the query matches the formula your business uses.

  • How much MRR did we lose to cancellations each month this year?
  • Which month had the highest churned MRR?
