KPIs for Manufacturers
These are the KPIs a manufacturer tracks for output, quality, downtime and delivery. They show where capacity and money are lost between raw material and shipped order.
The KPIs to track
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
OEE measures how well manufacturing equipment is used by combining availability, performance and quality.
Formula and SQL query on the Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) page.
First pass yield is the percentage of units that pass quality checks the first time, without rework or scrap.
Formula and SQL query on the First Pass Yield page.
Scrap rate is the share of units produced that cannot be sold or reworked and are discarded.
Formula and SQL query on the Scrap Rate page.
Equipment downtime rate is the share of scheduled production time that a machine is not running.
Formula and SQL query on the Equipment Downtime Rate page.
Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)
MTBF is the average operating time between one failure of a repairable machine and the next.
Formula and SQL query on the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) page.
OTIF is the share of orders delivered both on time and with the complete quantity ordered.
Formula and SQL query on the On-Time In-Full (OTIF) page.
Inventory turnover shows how many times a business sells and replaces its stock in a period.
Formula and SQL query on the Inventory Turnover page.
Throughput is the number of units a process completes in a given time.
Formula and SQL query on the Throughput page.
Where the data usually lives
A manufacturing execution system or machine logs, an ERP, quality inspection records and maintenance logs.
Measurement mistakes to avoid
- Planned stops (changeovers, maintenance) must be handled the same way in OEE and downtime.
- Rework that is counted as good output hides low first-pass yield.
- Averaging rates across lines with different volumes misleads; recompute from totals.
Questions to ask your data
You can type these as plain questions. SchemaChat turns each one into SQL against your connected database or uploaded file, runs it, and shows the SQL and the figures it used so you can check the answer before you share it. Check that the result matches how your business defines each KPI.
- What was OEE by line this week?
- Which machines had the most unplanned downtime last month?
- What is our scrap rate by product?
- What share of orders shipped on time and in full?
