What is Natural Language Query?

A natural language query is a question about your data typed in everyday language, which the system turns into a database query and answers.

Natural Language Query explained

Instead of writing SQL or dragging fields into a chart, you ask 'what were sales by region last quarter?'. Software translates the request into a query, runs it and returns a table or chart.

The risk is silent misinterpretation: the question can be ambiguous, or the system can pick the wrong column. Showing the generated query and the figures it used lets a person check the answer.

Example

Typing 'which customers have not ordered in 90 days?' and receiving a list, with the SQL used, is a natural language query.

Asking about it in plain English

With SchemaChat you can type a question about your own data instead of writing a query, and check the SQL and figures it used before you rely on the answer. For example:

  • Which customers have not ordered in the last 90 days?
