How to calculate Onboarding Completion Rate

Onboarding completion rate is the share of new users who finish the guided setup steps.

Formula

Completion rate = users who completed all onboarding steps ÷ users who started onboarding × 100

SQL query

This example assumes: onboarding(user_id, started_at, completed_at, last_step). It is written in PostgreSQL syntax; date functions differ slightly in MySQL, BigQuery and SQLite, and your column names will differ from these.

SELECT DATE_TRUNC('week', started_at) AS week,
       COUNT(*) AS started,
       COUNT(completed_at) AS completed,
       COUNT(completed_at) * 100.0 / NULLIF(COUNT(*), 0) AS completion_pct
FROM onboarding
GROUP BY 1
ORDER BY 1;

Common mistakes that make Onboarding Completion Rate wrong

  • Recent starters have not had time to finish; compare cohorts at the same age.
  • Look at the last step reached to find where users drop off, not only the total rate.
  • Optional steps should not count against completion.

Ask for Onboarding Completion Rate in plain English

Instead of writing the query yourself, you can type the question. SchemaChat turns it into SQL against your connected database or uploaded file, runs it, and shows the SQL and the figures it used so you can check the answer before you share it. It does not replace your judgement about the definition: check that the query matches the formula your business uses.

  • What is our onboarding completion rate by week?
  • At which step do most users drop off?
